The University of Rojava was established in Qamişlo in 2016, in the midst of the war, conflict, and extraordinary situation in Syria, in particular in Rojava/North and East of Syria. In this regard, it is an outcome of the Rojava Revolution. The RU offered an opportunity to students who had to suspend their education programs due to the conflict in Syria and geographical disconnection. The forced migration as a result of this conflict caused difficulties in finding professional and scientific staff. The RU became a solution to overcome these difficulties and support the students to maintain their education programs. RU is managed by Co-president (One woman and One man).

The RU aims to create a researching, creative, free, and freedom-seeking society and personality that believes in collective work and studies regional and international phenomena, and produces and uses scientific research and knowledge at a higher level. The primary goal of the RU is to graduate individuals who are able to undertake and complete all social and political duties with their scientific, social, and ethical background. Ecological life, democratic society, women’s freedom, relation with all components of the society, impartiality and modernity, experience development, social memory and conscious construct the core values of the RU. Teaching language is Kurdish, English and Arabic.
