Turkish Escalation In NE Syria Strikes Democratic Project, Syriac Military Council

the Qamishli-based Syriac Military Council warned that the Turkish attacks on areas in northeast Syria aimed to strike the democratic project in the region.

Since early 2022, Tel Tamr town and Abu Rasin (Zarkan) in Hasakah northern countryside have been under attack by Turkish artillery shells and drones.

The Turkish attacks come in tandem with signing the political document that unifies the Assyrian Syriac parties in the region, said Matay Hanna, spokesman of the Syriac Military Council.

On April 1, Assyrian Syriac political formations in the Syrian Jazira Region signed a political understanding document between the Democratic Assyrian organization and the Syriac Union party.

“Also, the Turkish assault comes in conjunction with the resumption of the intra-Kurdish dialogue. Turkey is concerned and watching the reign carefully and is too busy disturbing the peace in it,” Hanna said.

Turkey aims, by pounding Tel Tamr and Abu Rasin, to displace people and destroy stability and security in the region, according to Hanna.

Hanna said, “The current situation resembles that in 2015 when the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) entered the town and attempted to evacuate al-Khabour River Basin from its own people after destroying churches and kidnapping children and women.”

Moreover, the Turkish assault coincided with the holy festivals of the Christian community.

Turkey is well known for this tactic targeting civilians on Newroz Day, Kurdish celebrations, and on Akitu Day, Christians religious festivals.
